Nigeria finish 27th at World Athletics Games

A Nigerian 15-athlete delegation has finished 27th on the final medal table at the just concluded World Athletics Games held in Tokyo.

With just one silver medal won, the west African country was joined by fellow African countries: Algeria, Morocco, Greece, South Korea and Poland, to mention few, in the number position, during the championship which set new records for global participation.

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan continued her consistency as the country’s most reliable athletic performer as she clinched the only medal, in the women’s 100 meters hurdles.

Ezekiel Nataniel took fourth position in the 400 meters final hurdles but his  47.11 seconds race time broke his own national record. Another athlete, Kanyisola Ajayi finished sixth in the mens’ 100 metres final while Udodi Onwuruzuike lost out in the 200 meters semi-final, alongside Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who took fifth position in the final of the men’s long jump.

Israel Okon fell in the men’s 100 meters semi-final, while Rosemary Chukwuka was knocked out in her 100 heats. Other athletes include Samuel Ogazi, who failed to advance in the men’s 400 meters race.

In the field, Chioma Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi were eliminated in the discuss first round groupings while Sade Olatoye did not progress in the hammer.

Ese Brume bowed out in the women’s long jump alongside Charles Godfred who also missed out in the men’s category.
