Nigeria, Brazil sign MoU on local pharmaceutical production

Nigeria and Brazil have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting local pharmaceutical manufacturing, vaccine production, and wider industrial collaboration between both countries.

The agreement was signed by the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), EMS Brazil, and Oaks Medical Limited.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, who Presided over the signing ceremony,, said the partnership resulted from recent high-level engagements between President Bola Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Pate reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s health sector and advancing self-sufficiency:

“Today’s MoU is a concrete expression of our commitment to strengthening local manufacturing of vaccines and essential medicines. It transforms presidential-level commitments into operational partnerships that advance our health security and accelerate industrial development under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said,

“Through the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII), we are systematically unlocking the healthcare value chain, reducing import dependence, expanding technology transfer, and positioning Nigeria as a regional manufacturing powerhouse.”

Permanent Secretary Daju Kachollom also underscored the importance of the pact, noting that it aligns with the Ministry’s broader reforms to expand access to essential medical products and promote local manufacturing:

“We welcome our partners from Brazil and the private sector, and we look forward to a productive collaboration that will unlock new possibilities across the healthcare value chain.”

National Coordinator of PVAC, Abdul Mukhtar, said the initiative was created to tackle long-standing obstacles in the healthcare value chain and stressed that the new partnership represents a major step toward sustainable local production of vaccines and medicines:

Speaking on behalf of EMS Brazil, Ricardo Marques expressed confidence in the collaboration and described it as an opportunity to deepen technical and industrial ties between both nations:
