NESERA seals Oyo chemical facility over environmental violations

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has ordered the closure of Bond Chemicals Industries Limited in Oyo State for confirmed breaches of environmental regulations.

The action followed a public complaint, independently verified, revealing that the company was discharging untreated effluent into the environment.

A compliance inspection by NESREA’s South West Zonal Office on 18th February 2026 found that the facility lacked a functional Effluent Treatment Plant and was releasing wastewater with offensive odours directly into the environment, in violation of national standards.

Despite directives to install and operate proper effluent treatment systems and obtain the required permits, the company failed to comply. Exercising its statutory powers, NESREA sealed the facility to prevent further environmental damage and protect public health.

Prof. Innocent Barikor, Director General of NESREA, emphasized that all industrial operators must fully adhere to environmental regulations, including maintaining operational pollution control equipment. He added that the agency will continue nationwide monitoring and enforcement, imposing sanctions on violators where necessary.

The facility will remain closed until it fully complies with NESREA’s directives, with ongoing investigations and compliance monitoring to ensure environmental standards are met.
