The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has taken 19 suspected drug peddlers into custody in a sweeping crackdown targeting illicit drug networks and dismantling multiple distribution points.
The operation took place in Gezawa Local Government Area, Kano State, as part of the command’s “Operation Ramadan Mubarak”, an initiative aimed at curbing drug-related activities during and after the Ramadan period.
NDLEA disclosed that the operation led to the recovery of various prohibited and controlled substances, which have been secured as exhibits while investigations continue.
The agency confirmed that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to help trace broader supply chains and identify accomplices.
Recovered substances include cannabis sativa, diazepam, Exol-5 (commonly known on the streets as “Suck and Die”), pregabalin tablets, and other regulated drugs.
According to NDLEA, the enforcement action is part of a sustained campaign to disrupt street-level drug markets and safeguard public health.
The initiative reflects an intensified strategy to reduce drug abuse and trafficking through coordinated intelligence and community engagement.
Speaking on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Sadiq Maigatari, quoted the State Commander, Dahiru Lawal, saying the exercise was executed under an ongoing enforcement drive.
He explained that the operation aimed to reinforce public safety and uphold moral and social order during a sensitive period.
“Our objective is to ensure safe streets and enable residents to observe a peaceful and fulfilling period,” Lawal said.
“If some individuals disregard their faith, health, and the safety of others, the agency will act decisively to protect the wider community.”
Lawal noted that the operation followed credible intelligence provided by a concerned member of the public. He commended residents for their timely information, emphasizing that community cooperation is central to dismantling drug networks.
He urged continued vigilance and encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities linked to narcotics trafficking. Lawal added that the enforcement action aligns with the broader directive of the NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Marwa
