The Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), General Buba Marwa, has diclosed that it has seized drugs worth N100 billion and arrested no fewer than 1,630 criminals hess than eight months .
He said that the money accruing from the seizures have been sent to the Federal Government’s purse through the Central Bank of Nigeria, adding that the agency would intensify it operations against illicit drugs across the country.
Marwa, who spoke on Friday after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, decried the prevalence of drug usage and abuse across the country, noting that youths are jeopardising their future by abusing the illicit substances.
According to anti-narcotic agency’s boss, Nigeria has 10.6million cannabis users, this is the highest in the world, isn’t it sad? a nation with such a high record of drug use should not be contemplating the legalisation of marijuana.
Marwa xplained that scientists are yet to develop a way to make the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) level in cannabis, drop to zero, and as such the recreational drug was still very harmful to health.
“It’s a danger to society and we must never allow its legalization. This is something we need to kill. We can never support legalisation and I don’t see how the National Assembly will pass the act because I know 90 percent or more of the honourables and distinguished members in the National Assembly know the implications of their legislation.
“They dare not go back to their constituencies if anyone signs the legislation because we are seeing the implications on the ground, the youths, the families all being destroyed because of cannabis and drugs,” Marwa said.
