In a major operation aimed at curbing drug trafficking ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr festivities, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano has seized 510 blocks of cannabis sativa and arrested a 34-year-old suspect, Sani Musa.
The suspect was apprehended following intelligence on large-scale drug movement within Bebeji Local Government Area.
The agency disclosed that the contraband was carefully concealed in transit and intended for distribution across multiple locations, underscoring the persistent challenge of drug trafficking in the state.
The NDLEA State Commander, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, said the operation was part of intensified efforts to intercept illicit drugs, particularly during festive periods when demand and circulation tend to spike.
“During the operation, our officers recovered 510 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa from the suspect,” he stated.
Yahaya-Lawal added that Musa confessed the consignment had been delivered to him by a known drug baron identified as “Alaramma,” who tasked him with safekeeping the drugs at his residence.
“The suspect admitted that he was authorized to sell the illicit drugs to customers and that the stock was meant for distribution during the Sallah period, when demand and profits are usually high,” the commander revealed.
He stressed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend “Alaramma,” who remains at large.
The agency assured residents of sustained operations across the state, particularly during festive periods, to curb drug trafficking and related criminal activities.
Yahaya-Lawal called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest NDLEA office.
He also warned those involved in illicit drug activities to desist and embrace lawful means of livelihood, while encouraging residents to choose safe and healthy ways to celebrate the festive period.
