The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a final-year student of the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme in Akwanga for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby in a bush.
The young woman was taken into custody after being identified as the mother of the child, who was found wrapped in a piece of cloth and left in the open.
The baby was discovered alive by residents near Hope Academy Primary School, along AA Koto Street, where the final-year student had allegedly dumped her.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, said the Commissioner of Police had directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for thorough investigation and prosecution,” Nansel told reporters.
He added that the baby is currently receiving medical attention and will be handed over to the appropriate social welfare authorities for proper care.
Nansel also warned against acts of child abandonment, stressing that such offences will be met with the full weight of the law.
