The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has summoned controversial singer Speed Darlington over allegations of sexually abusing underage girls.
NAPTIP’s action follows a viral live Instagram session in which the singer allegedly admitted to having a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl, an admission that sparked public outrage and calls for government intervention.
In response to the growing concern, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) reviewed the matter but, citing jurisdictional limitations, referred the case to NAPTIP and urged the agency to carry out a thorough investigation.
In response, Speed Darlington took to social media to deny the allegation, claiming that his controversial comment was merely a “marketing stunt” intended to promote his new song. He also issued an apology to those offended by his remarks.
However, NAPTIP stated that the singer’s apology would not stop the agency from pursuing the case, stressing that his cooperation is essential to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, “Mr. Darlington Okoye (aka Speed Darlington) is urged to comply with the official invitation issued on May 28, 2025, regarding a viral video and others in which he admitted to sexually abusing a minor. Failure to respond may result in further action.”
The two-page summons, dated May 28, requests that Speed Darlington appear in person for an interview at NAPTIP’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, May 30, 2025.
The agency warned that if the allegations are confirmed, they would constitute serious offences under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act (TIPPEA) 2015 and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
“You are hereby invited to appear in person for an interview. Please bring any legal representation or documents you consider relevant. Failure to honour this invitation may lead to further legal action,” it said.
