Marseille’s manager resign after losing 5-0 to PSG

Italian football tactician, Roberto de Zerbi has resigned as manager of the French football club Olympique de Marseille, hours after the team lost 5-0 to Paris St-Germain (PSG) during a league match.

Before PSG defeat, De Zerbi was also unable qualify the team for the knockout stage of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League after losing 3-0 to Belgian club, Club Brugge.

De Zerbi left the club on Wednesday, barely two years after leaving Brighton, where he spent the same period in charge.

He led Marseille to second in Ligue 1 last season and leaves with the club fourth in the French top flight – 12 points behind leaders PSG.

According to the statement released by the club, “Olympique de Marseille and Roberto De Zerbi, coach of the first team, have announced the end of their collaboration by mutual agreement.

“Following discussions between all stakeholders in the club’s management – the owner, president, director of football, and coach – it was decided to make a change at the helm of the first team.

“This was a difficult collective decision, taken after careful consideration in the best interests of the club, in order to respond to the sporting challenges of the end of the season.”
