Makinde advocates 6yrs single term for president, governors

By Israel Adekayero

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has called for a constitutional amendment to introduce a single six-year tenure for the offices of the President and state governors in Nigeria arguing that it would promote better governance and reduce political tension.

According to Makinde, the proposed reform would significantly reduce the distractions and pressures associated with seeking a second term, enabling elected leaders to focus entirely on governance.

The governor made the call on Thursday while speaking at a political summit organized by the Oyo State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategy in Ibadan.

He argued that the current two-term structure often hinders long-term planning and development, as incumbents focus more on retaining power than delivering on their mandates.

“A single term of six years will allow elected leaders to concentrate fully on governance without the pressure and politicking that come with seeking re-election,” Makinde said.

He added that such a change would deepen the nation’s democratic experience and reduce the cost of elections, which continues to burden public finances.

The governor, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also noted that the proposal was not about any individual or political party but about reforming Nigeria’s democratic system for greater efficiency and accountability.

Makinde’s proposal comes at a time of renewed national debate on constitutional restructuring and electoral reforms.

While some political stakeholders have expressed support for a single-term arrangement, others argue that it could deny the electorate the opportunity to reward performance through re-election.

The Nigerian Constitution currently provides for a maximum of two four-year terms for the President and governors.

The governor’s call is expected to ignite further discussions among political leaders, civil society groups, and lawmakers as Nigeria continues to grapple with calls for systemic reforms.
