The Libyan government has deported none fewer than 80 Nigerian migrants over offences of illegal stay as part of efforts to curb illegal migration into the country.
The deportees were held in various detention centres after which the authorities, having conducted an investigation on the incident, repatriated the detainees in a bid to also decongest holding facilities.
The Department for Combating Illegal Migration, DCIM, after collaborating with the Nigerian Consulate in Tripoli, held that the enforcement was carried out in line with judicial directives which were issued by the Libyan Justice Police.
A group, Migrant Rescue Watch, released a statement on the matter on Thursday which reads, ”Judicial Police Dept on orders of Public Prosecutor’s Office, transferred a group of undocumented migrant females of Nigerian nationality to DCIM custody in Tripoli.
”DCIM, with the Nigerian consular support, repatriated 80 migrants of Nigerians via the Mitiga International Airport.”
