Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has officially joined the race for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), setting the stage for a major political showdown ahead of the party’s national convention.
With a reputation as one of the founding pillars of the PDP, Lamido’s entry into the contest has reignited discussions about restoring the party’s lost glory and rebuilding its internal structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, in a statement shared on his social media handle on Monday, said his decision to contest was driven by a deep sense of duty to reposition the PDP and return it to its core democratic ideals.
“By God’s grace, I will be at Wadata Plaza to pick up my nomination form for the office of National Chairman. It’s time to rebuild and restore the PDP to its rightful place in Nigerian politics,” Lamido stated.
The former minister noted that his aspiration reflects his commitment to strengthening internal democracy and fostering unity among party members.
He stressed that the PDP must once again become a political movement that belongs to the people and serves their collective interests.
“My passion for democracy and my dedication to the PDP’s founding vision remain unwavering,” he said. “We must restore faith in our internal processes and prepare for victory in future elections.”
Lamido, who served as Jigawa State governor from 2007 to 2015, has been a consistent voice within the PDP, advocating reforms and inclusiveness since the party’s early years.
His declaration is seen as a move that could alter the dynamics of the chairmanship race as the opposition party prepares for a crucial leadership transition.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, is expected to elect a new national chairman during its forthcoming convention — a development considered pivotal to its plans for a comeback ahead of 2027.
As the PDP moves toward its national convention, Lamido’s message of restoration, unity, and democratic renewal is expected to resonate strongly with delegates seeking stability, vision, and leadership capable of reviving the party’s fortunes.
