Lagos police detain officers for extorting N3.3m from couple

The Lagos State Police Command has detained three officers accused of extorting ₦3.3 million from a couple during a stop-and-search operation in the state.

The officers, attached to Area H Command in Ogudu, were detained after they were traced following allegations that surfaced on social media.

One of the officers, whose name was not disclosed, allegedly unlawfully arrested the couple on December 18, 2025, and coerced them into paying $2,000.

It was learnt that after the incident attracted public attention on X, ₦2.2 million was refunded to the victims, while the officers allegedly pleaded to retain about ₦1.1 million, claiming the sum had already been shared among several personnel.

Confirming the development on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said, “The officers involved have been taken into custody and transferred to the command headquarters for a thorough investigation.”

She added that the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration to supervise the inquiry.

According to the command, the affected officers have already made statements to aid the probe, while efforts are underway to ensure the complainant formally presents his account.

The investigation is expected to determine the extent of the alleged misconduct and appropriate disciplinary measures against those found culpable.
