Lagos Govt. warns residents against improper waste disposal during Eid

The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps has urged residents to uphold environmental responsibility and follow best sanitation practices before, during, and after the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

Corps Marshal Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole made the call at the agency’s Command Headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi, emphasizing the importance of sustained cleanliness and compliance with sanitation laws to ensure a healthier Lagos.

Speaking Thursday ahead of the festivities, Cole highlighted the need for public awareness on environmental stewardship, warning against improper refuse disposal, open defecation, urination, and street trading, while stressing that all buildings, public and private, must have valid waste collection contracts.

“I congratulate Muslims worldwide on completing the 30-day spiritual journey of Ramadan. As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, it is crucial that we collectively uphold environmental responsibility and maintain a clean and safe Lagos,” he said.

Cole also commended the Lagos State Government for reinstating the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to resume Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., ten years after its suspension—describing it as a participatory initiative to maintain order without restricting movement.

The Corps Marshal instructed all operatives across the state’s 21 Divisional Commands to remain vigilant during the holiday, stepping up monitoring to curb offences such as open defecation, urination, and illegal street trading on road setbacks, medians, lay-bys, kerbs, and verges.

He further urged pedestrians to use designated footbridges and warned against obstructing or assaulting KAI officers on duty, noting that over 20 offenders have been jailed since January 2026 for such violations.

Cole further encouraged Lagosians to resolve environmental concerns through compliance and dialogue rather than violence, assuring that the agency is committed to prosecuting offenders while promoting voluntary adherence for a safer, cleaner city.
