Lagos Govt. trains LASTMA officers on effective traffic management

As part of efforts to improve traffic control and reduce congestion across the bustling city, the Lagos State Government has begun a 5-day leadership and capacity-building training for senior officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The training, which commenced in Oshodi area of the state, involves 82 high-ranking officers, including 50 zonal heads, and is focused on strengthening leadership, coordination, and strategic decision-making within the agency.

This initiative follows an earlier exercise at the beginning of the year, where over 3,000 frontline LASTMA personnel were retrained on modern traffic management practices.

The current programme, however, targets the agency’s leadership to ensure better oversight and operational efficiency across the state.

Declaring the programme open, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the exercise as a timely investment in the professional development of the agency’s top officers.

He said the training would enhance service delivery, promote public trust, and equip officers to handle Lagos’ complex traffic challenges more effectively.

“The training modules encompass Job Description and Performance Management, Effective Leadership in Organisational Development, Incident Management and Conflict Resolution with Emotional Intelligence, Effective Communication and Presentation Skills, Stress and Health Management, as well as Ethical Standards and Discipline,” the LASTMA boss said.

Also speaking, the Director of Training and Human Capacity Development, Akinpelu Ayuba, thanked Sanwo-Olu for his continuous support and commitment to developing the agency’s workforce.

He noted that ongoing training and capacity development are essential to improving LASTMA’s overall performance, as it enables officers to stay updated with modern traffic management techniques and better respond to the dynamic challenges of road safety in Lagos.

Ayuba also advised motorists across the state to cooperate fully with traffic officers by obeying all road regulations, remaining patient during enforcement activities, and demonstrating respect and civility in their interactions with LASTMA personnel.

He further stressed that achieving a safer, more organized, and efficient traffic system in a rapidly growing city like Lagos cannot be the responsibility of government agencies alone, but requires collective effort and mutual understanding between traffic officials and the motoring public.
