Lagos Govt. seals public toilet over sewage discharge

In a move to safeguard public health and protect the environment, the Lagos State Government has sealed a public toilet in Ebute Metta for illegally discharging untreated sewage into a public drainage system, describing the act as a grave environmental violation.

The closure was enforced following several complaints of offensive odour emanating from the facility, which posed serious health concerns to the surrounding environment.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the practice constituted a public nuisance and posed significant health risks to residents.

He noted that improper wastewater disposal violates existing environmental regulations and undermines ongoing sanitation efforts across the state.

Wahab warned that operators of facilities found engaging in similar acts would face stiff penalties, including possible prosecution, as part of the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

The Commissioner urged residents to adopt proper wastewater management and hygiene practices, including the use of approved sewage evacuation services, to prevent environmental pollution and the spread of waterborne diseases within their communities.

“For enquiries or to report infractions, the Agency can be reached via its official lines: 08022022397, 07025332163, or through its social media platforms: @lswmomedia on Instagram and Twitter, and The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Facebook.”
