Officers of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) have arrested a residents for violating environmental laws, following allegations of dumping waste at unauthorized locations along the road.
The suspect was apprehended on the spot following an early morning surveillance operation conducted by relevant agencies tasked with upholding sanitation standards across the state.
This arrest took place during a routine patrol conducted on Monday in Lagos State, Nigeria, as part of intensified efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal that contributes to flooding, disease outbreaks, and urban blight.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed this thorough a statement issued on Monday on his social media platform.
“During our early morning patrol today, the individual seen in the video was apprehended for dumping refuse on the road,” he said.
“The suspect will be charged in accordance with the environmental laws of Lagos State. We will continue to enforce these laws to ensure compliance and maintain a clean and orderly environment,” Wahab added.
The commissioner emphasized the state’s unwavering commitment to strict enforcement, warning that violators face prosecution under existing environmental regulations designed to promote public health and aesthetic orderliness.
He further urged residents to report any incidents of illegal dumping to LAWMA to help maintain a cleaner, healthier city.
