Lagos community police nabs hoodlum terrorizingĀ residents

In a bold move to strengthen public safety and eliminate criminal activity, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) has arrested a suspected hoodlum for terrorizing residents and passersby in the Broad Street area of Lagos Island East.

The suspect, Matthew Chukwu, was taken into custody after the Corps received a distress call from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Lagos Island East concerning the activities of displaced persons sleeping on Broad Street.

In a statement issued by the enforcement agency on Friday, Chukwu was found in possession of a cutlass, believed to be the weapon used in his criminal operations in the area.

Investigations carried out by corps personnel indicated that Chukwu often disguised himself as a mentally unstable person while spying on unsuspecting targets at night, especially females.

The Corps further disclosed that the suspect, along with others who had converted the area into a makeshift home, has been taken to the nearest police station for investigation and possible prosecution.

While reiterating its stance against criminal activities in communities, the Corps reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a safer, cleaner, and more secure Lagos for all residents.

According to the statement, “The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lion Building Detached, in collaboration with the Lion Building Police Division, has apprehended a suspect alleged to have been terrorizing residents and passersby along Broad Street, Lagos Island.

“At about 12:17 hrs on Thursday, 11th September 2025, the Corps received a distress call from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Lagos Island East concerning the activities of displaced persons sleeping on Broad Street.

“On prompt response, officers arrested one Mr. Matthew Chukwu, a native of Enugu State, who was found in possession of a cutlass. Preliminary findings suggest that the suspect often disguised as a mentally unstable person while spying on unsuspecting targets around 2:00 a.m., particularly females, before laying in wait to attack.

“The suspect, alongside others who had converted the area into a makeshift home, have been taken to the nearest police station for investigation and possible protection. Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing to establish further facts surrounding the case.
