Kwara assembly passes N656.5bn 2026 budget into law

By Helen Okoli.

The Kwara State House of Assembly has successfully passed the 2026 appropriation bill into law, approving a total sum of N656.5 billion after deliberating on and enhancing the initial proposal submitted by the executive arm of government.

Lawmakers unanimously adopted the enlarged fiscal framework during plenary, reflecting their commitment to bolstering critical developmental initiatives across various sectors in the state while aligning with the administration’s strategic priorities.

The budget was passed on Thursday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, following the presentation of the original N644 billion proposal by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq late last year, with the additional N10.5 billion adjustment incorporated to accommodate expanded funding for essential projects and urgent needs.

This upward revision aims to accelerate the completion of ongoing infrastructure developments, strengthen security architecture against rising threats like kidnapping, and invest more robustly in capital expenditure, which remains a core focus of the fiscal plan.

The assembly’s decision underscores efforts to ensure the budget adequately addresses public welfare, economic growth, and enhanced service delivery, building upon the governor’s emphasis on prioritizing capital spending over recurrent costs in the initial estimates.

The approved figure represents a deliberate enhancement to empower more impactful interventions in health, education, agriculture, and other key areas vital for sustainable progress in Kwara State during the 2026 fiscal year.
