Kidnappers demand N53M ransom to release 28 Plateau passengers

28 travelers kidnapped in Plateau State are now at the mercy of their captors, who are demanding around ₦53 million from the victims’ families for their release.

According to relatives of the abducted passengers, the kidnappers insisted that each hostage must attract a separate payment, warning that no concessions would be made despite appeals from families who said the demand far exceeds their means.

Speaking on behalf of the affected families, a relative, Ibrahim Musa, said the kidnappers had already made direct contact and outlined their terms.

“They told us clearly that we must pay ₦1.5 million for each person. They said the money applies to everyone, young or old,” he said, adding that he had appealed for leniency due to the financial hardship facing the families.

“I told them we are poor villagers and cannot raise such an amount. Many of those taken are teenagers, and their parents simply don’t have that kind of money. I begged them to consider our situation,” Musa added.

He noted, however, that the kidnappers attempted to calm fears by assuring the families that the captives were still alive.

“They said our people are safe for now and asked us to cooperate if we want them released,” Musa said.

The Guild had reported that the passengers were seized on Sunday night while traveling to a Maulud celebration, after their vehicle was intercepted in Zak community of Bashar District, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed it was aware of the abduction, stating that an investigation had commenced and assuring residents that efforts were underway to rescue the victims.

Meanwhile, community members in Wase LGA have renewed calls for a stronger security presence, warning that kidnapping, banditry, and cattle rustling continue to threaten lives and livelihoods in the area.
