Kano woman dies hours after delivering quintuplets

Joy turned to tragedy in Kano as a mother of quintuplets lost her life just hours after giving birth, leaving five newborns in the care of family and medical staff.

The incident occurred at the government-owned Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where the mother, Hafsatu Yusuf, had been admitted for delivery.

As gathered, she suffered severe postpartum bleeding shortly after giving birth and died despite emergency medical interventions.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Abubakar, confirmed the incident on Thursday and explained the circumstances.

“The patient developed complications after delivery and despite all medical interventions to save her life, unfortunately she succumbed,” Abubakar said.

He further revealed that medical expectations during the pregnancy differed significantly from the outcome during labour.

“Earlier scans indicated the mother was carrying triplets. However, as labour progressed, two additional babies were delivered, resulting in quintuplets—three boys and two girls,” he added.

The deceased’s husband, Salisu Nufi’u, a tricycle operator, had earlier expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for taking full responsibility for the medical expenses of his wife and the babies.

Meanwhile, the five newborns are currently receiving specialised neonatal care, with doctors closely monitoring them to ensure their survival and stability.
