The Kano Police Command has taken into custody a Kano-based content creator after he allegedly threatened in a viral video to mobilise youths to attack residents identified as non-indigenes.
The arrest followed the circulation of a widely shared clip on social media in which the suspect reportedly made inflammatory remarks capable of inciting unrest and targeting non-indigenous community members.
According to the police, the video sparked public concern and heightened tensions, prompting security operatives to act swiftly to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori, confirmed the arrest during a briefing at the Command headquarters on Thursday. He warned that the police would not tolerate any form of incitement, hate speech, or threats capable of disturbing public peace.
“We view the inflammatory statement very seriously, and the suspect will face the full weight of the law once investigations are concluded,” Bakori told reporters.
He further cautioned social media users against spreading provocative messages, stressing that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring online activities that could threaten public safety.
“Any person found spreading false or inciting information will be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted accordingly. The command will not tolerate hate speech, incitement, or acts capable of provoking violence,” he added.
The police chief also assured residents that enhanced security measures have been deployed to maintain calm and prevent possible unrest.
“We have strengthened our security presence and are working with other agencies to ensure that every resident remains safe. There is no cause for alarm,” he said.
Speaking separately, the Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Abdullahi Waiya, reiterated the state government’s commitment to safeguarding all residents, regardless of ethnic or religious background.
“Kano is a cosmopolitan city where people from different parts of the country live and conduct their businesses peacefully. The government will not allow any action that threatens this harmony,” Waiya said.
He also emphasised that the state government would continue to collaborate with security agencies to protect lives and property while ensuring that those responsible for actions undermining public peace are held accountable.
