Ahead of the 2027 election, former Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after announcing his resignation from the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).
Gwarzo said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and other stakeholders, stressing that recent political developments compelled him to reconsider his continued membership of the party.
According to him, the move was driven by the need to pursue a political direction that aligns with his vision for good governance and democratic ideals.
“This decision comes after deep reflection and wide consultations with my political associates, supporters and well-wishers,” he stated.
He added that evolving political realities required him to review his political affiliation in the interest of the people and the future of Kano State and the country.
“My decision is informed by patriotic considerations and the need to pursue a political path that aligns with my vision for good governance, democratic values and sustainable development,” he said.
The resignation seen on Monday in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Gwarzo Ward, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State and dated March 29, 2026.
Moreover, Gwarzo expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the NNPP for the cooperation and support he received while he remained in the party.
“I wish to sincerely appreciate the leadership and members of the party for the cooperation, respect and support I received during my stay,” he said.
However, the former deputy governor did not state specific details regarding the timing of his planned move to the African Democratic Congress, though political associates indicated that consultations toward the transition were ongoing.
This came hours after his leader and former presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, left the patty following his meeting with ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who left the Peoples Democratic Party for the ADC.
