Kano court sentences four robbers to 10yrs imprisonment

A Kano court has sentenced four armed robbers to ten years imprisonment each, along with fines, following their conviction on multiple charges of armed robbery and criminal conspiracy.

The convicts, Shafi’u Abubakar, Usman Suleiman, Usman Sa’idu, and Ali Isa, were found guilty on three counts, which included entering residential homes with deadly weapons and stealing valuables.

Justice Adam Abdullahi handed down the sentence, also imposing a fine of N10,000 per count. “The law must be upheld, and those who terrorise communities will face justice,” the judge said.

The prosecution presented evidence to demonstrate that the defendants had targeted homes in Sabon Garin Doka and Bankaura communities, taking cash, motorcycles, and mobile phones.

Prosecution counsel, Barrister Ibrahim Garba Arif, called two witnesses who testified to the attacks, providing key details that linked the suspects to the crimes.

Initially pleading not guilty, the accused changed their plea to guilty upon legal counsel’s advice, prompting the court to summarily try the case.

The court ruled that the sentences would run concurrently, effective from their arrest date of 22nd July 2024.

Barrister Basira Yunus, representing the defendants, acknowledged the court’s decision and said, “My clients have accepted responsibility, and we respect the judgment of the court.”

The convictions are expected to serve as a deterrent to criminal activities in Ungogo Local Government Area and reinforce the enforcement of penal provisions against armed robbery in the state.
