Kaduna youths have staged protests over the detention of former state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, calling for his immediate release and urging authorities to address their concerns without delay.
The protesters described the action as a coordinated response to what they termed the unjust and prolonged detention of the former governor.
The demonstrations began yesterday in parts of the Kaduna metropolis and later spread to sections of Southern Kaduna, drawing hundreds of participants.
According to the youths, the development has sparked widespread dissatisfaction, with many believing that the process surrounding his arrest lacks transparency and fairness.
Spokespersons for the coalition said during Thursday’s protest that the agitation would remain peaceful but firm.
“Our position is clear — this detention must not be allowed to drag on indefinitely,” one of the youth coordinators told journalists.
He added that the movement was prepared to explore “every lawful and democratic channel” to secure El-Rufai’s release.
Protest leaders also warned that mobilisation could extend beyond the state if authorities fail to respond.
“We are not calling for disorder,” another organiser said. “However, silence from those in charge will only deepen frustration among the youths.”
Meanwhile, The Guild reports that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which is holding the former governor, has maintained that due process is being followed in its ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct.
Security personnel monitored the demonstrations to prevent escalation, while residents reported temporary disruptions to vehicular movement as protesters marched and displayed placards demanding justice.
As of press time, organisers said further actions were being planned, stressing that their central demand remains the unconditional release of El-Rufai.
