A violent rainstorm has caused significant destruction in the Kurya community of Kaduna State, completely levelling the area’s only central primary school while leaving pupils with no classrooms for learning
The storm, which residents described as brief but intense, came with fierce winds that tore off rooftops and collapsed walls, affecting many households. The school building, which had earlier closed for the day, was reduced to rubble.
“It was painful to see,” said Mrs. Ruth Yakubu, a staff member at the school. “We had locked up after classes, not knowing the building would be gone by evening. Thankfully, no one was inside, but it’s a huge setback for our pupils”, she narrated to The Guild.
The rainstorm, which began around 5 PM on the evening of Wednesday, May 14, 2025, was the most destructive in recent memory, according to residents of the community.
Though no lives were lost, the incident has disrupted education in a community where learning opportunities are already scarce.
Community leaders are now calling on the Kaduna State Government and emergency response agencies to urgently assist in rebuilding the school and restoring normalcy.
