Kaduna PDP lawmaker decamps to APC

By Marycelia Agim

The lawmaker representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, Sunday Katung, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), increasing the ruling party’s representation to 77 in the 109-member Senate.

Katung described the PDP as “fractured” and said that evolving political realities in Nigeria left him with no choice but to join the ruling party.

“Hope for a secure future for myself and my constituents is with the APC,” he added, citing deepening divisions and leadership crises in the PDP that no longer align with his constituents’ mandate.

The announcement was made during plenary on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in Abuja, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Katung’s letter to the chamber.

Katung represents Kaduna South, while Kaduna Central and Kaduna North remain under PDP senators Lawal Usman and Ibrahim Mustapha, respectively.

Only months ago, Katung had denied rumours of a potential defection, insisting he remained committed to the PDP despite widespread speculation.

Recent defections have weakened the PDP nationally, including Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe from Cross River North. The party has also lost governors and lawmakers in Bayelsa, Rivers, and Enugu states amid internal disputes linked to rival acting national chairmen.

Katung’s departure underscores the APC’s growing influence in the legislature and raises further concerns about the PDP’s cohesion ahead of upcoming elections.
