JUST IN: Tinubu nominates General Musa as defence minister

Barely 24 hours after the Minister for Defence, Badaru Abubakar, resigned from his appointment, President Bola Tinubu has nominated the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (rtd), to replace him.

The president transmitted Musa’s name through a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, indicating that he will be succeeding Abubakar, who voluntarily stepped down from his office on health grounds.

The former Chief of Defence Staff’s nomination was disclosed through a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday.

In the letter to the Senate, Tinubu expressed confidence in General Musa’s ability to lead the Ministry of Defence and further strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

The general’s nomination came just hours after a meeting with Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening, the same day Abubakar resigned.

Musa served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 until October 2025 and was the recipient of the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, Musa received his early education in the state before proceeding to the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria.
