JUST IN: Tinubu decorates Disu as new Acting IGP

President Bola Tinubu has decorated Tunji Disu with a new rank to match his office as the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), barely 24 hours after succeeding his former boss, Kayode Egbetokun, who resigned from office on personal grounds.

Until his appointment, Disu was an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, deployed two weeks ago to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, to assist the Nigerian Police Force tackle crimes across the country.

Meanwhile, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has allegedly listed 35 senior police officers, who were higher in rank, for compulsory retirement, including eight Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGs), for Egbetokun.

The decoration was held on Wednesday during a short ceremony attended by senior Ministers and other appointees inside the Aso Rock, Abuja.

Disu, who took his first salute as Inspector-General from members of the Quarter Guard and police officers at the Force Headquarters after returning from the Villa at about 4:25 p.m, proceeded with the former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, to the official handover ceremony.

Egbetokun, dressed in a blue suit, white shirt, and tie, was accompanied by Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to the handing-over ceremony held inside the Force headquarters.

Egbetokun, who was appointed on June 19, 2023, resigned his position on Tuesday, citing family reasons, paving the way for Disu’s appointment.

Following Disu’s appointment, names of 35 senior officers including the DIGs that accompanied Egbedokun to the handling over ceremony, have been penciled down for retirement with the former IGP.

They were considered as senior to the Acting IGP who was appointed by the President to assist his administration address security concerns across the country.

Among those that have been listed for compulsory retirement is DIG for the Department of Training and Development, DIG Frank Mba, who is popular within the police force.

Others were the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of Finance and Administration, DIG Yahaya Abubakar; Head of Logistics and Supply, DIG Adebola Hamzat; and DIG Adebowale Williams, who supervises Information and Communication Technology at the Force Headquarters.
