JUST IN: Rivers lawmakers resume plenary after Tinubu lift emergency rule

The Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed plenary session after a six-month suspension imposed during the state of emergency, which followed the prolonged political crisis between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The plenary session was last held on March 12, 2025, roughly one week before President Bola Tinubu declared the emergency decree.

Recall that Tinubu suspended the legislature along with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected commissioners and aides under the administration.

He also appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Retd) as the Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State.

However, the president yesterday lifted the emergency rule, reinstating Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Assembly.

Following the lift, the lawmakers, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, reconvened at the Assembly Residential Quarters along the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway on Thursday.

As the House reconvenes to resume its legislative duties, a large crowd of supporters has gathered at the Government House, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Governor following his reinstatement.
