Political tension in Rivers State has escalated as the House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy after serving them with a notice of gross misconduct.
The notice, which accuses the duo of misconduct in the performance of their duties, was moved by twenty-six members of the Assembly and presented to the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, during plenary on Thursday.
During the presentation on the floor of the House, the lawmakers accused Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, of reckless and unconstitutional misuse of public funds.
The notice against the governor was presented by the Majority Leader, Major Jack, while the allegations against Odu were laid by the Deputy Leader, Linda Stewart, both relying on Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and other extant laws.
The notices cite several alleged infractions, including the failure to present the state budget, the expenditure of public funds without legislative approval, the withholding of statutory allocations and salaries due to the House of Assembly and its agencies, the bypassing of the Assembly in screening government appointments, the recognition of parallel legislative entities, and the demolition of the Assembly complex.
