Medical services across public hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been severely disrupted following an industrial action by doctors in the seat of power, leaving patients helpless and stranded.
The 7-day strike, embarked upon by the health practitioners, has forced many patients seeking consultations and treatment to leave without receiving medical attention.
The strike, which began on Monday, has affected both public and tertiary healthcare facilities across the FCT.
Hospitals in Abuja have reported reduced staffing levels, with elective procedures postponed and emergency units overwhelmed.
The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT) cited mounting systemic challenges and unsustainable workloads as the key reasons behind the industrial action.
“Our members are overburdened and often required to cover multiple departments simultaneously, putting both doctors and patients at risk,” said George Ebong, ARD-FCT President.
“Comprehensive reforms are essential to restore efficiency and safety in our healthcare system. We cannot continue under conditions that compromise patient care and doctor welfare,” Ebong added.
As the strike continues, patients and advocacy groups are calling on the FCT administration to intervene urgently, warning that prolonged disruptions could have severe consequences for vulnerable populations.
