Man United sacks Amorim after Leeds draw

By Felix Kuyinu

Manchester United have sacked Reuben Amorim from managerial duties following the 1-1 draw against Leeds United in the Premier League.

The club issued a statement to confirm Amorim’s sacking, adding that the dismissal takes immediate effect to bring down the curtains of the Portuguese tactician at Old Trafford having steered the side for 14 months.

”Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United,” The club management stated in the statement.

”Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa Final in Bilbao in May,” the statement continues.

”With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”

The English club paid £9.25m to hire Amorim from Portuguese side, Sporting Lisbon, to become the sixth permanent managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and the seventh in the Premier League era.

Manchester United thanked the coach for his contribution to the club and disclosed that the vacant position will now be held by former midfielder, Darren Fletcher, as interim manager.
