JUST IN: Lagos collapsed mosque death toll hits three, 12 injure

No fewer than two additional bodies of worshippers were removed under rubbles of the Lagos collapsed mosque by the State emergency officials, increasing death toll to three in the state.

Aside from that, three additional worshippers were rescued under the rubbles of the one-storey building used as worship center in Papa Ajao axis of Mushin Local Governments Area of Lagos State by emergency officials during search and rescue operations at the scene.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the development on Sunday, while disclosing that the search and rescue operations have been concluded by emergency officials.

“And the responders at the scene of the incident includes the Agency’s response team led by the PS, LRU Fire unit, Lagos State Fire Service,LASBCA, NEMA, Nigeria Police, LNSC, FRSC and LASAMBUS”.

Oke-Osanyintolu explained that of the 12 injured victims, five worshippers that sustained minor injuries have been discharged with the seven others, who had severe fractures, were currently in admission at state-owned hospital where they were being treated.

The LASEMA boss, who led the rescue operation, said that the mosque is located on Yusuf Street, off Ladipo Road, Papa Ajao, collapsed at about 1:40 pm when the Muslims were having their prayer.

According to him, “Preliminary investigation carried out upon arrival at the scene revealed that an excavator clearing the road recklessly hit a mosque (a storey building) by the road side which resulted to the mosque collapse”.
