Residents of Kaiama Local Government Area have been placed under a dusk-to-dawn curfew by the council, following rising security threats linked to suspected bandit activities in the area.
Under the new directive, a total curfew will be enforced daily from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., with all forms of movement, both vehicular and pedestrian, strictly prohibited across the local government area during the specified hours.
The Chairman of the council, Abubakar Danladi, announced the immediate imposition of the restriction on Tuesday after an emergency security meeting following threatening letters from bandits terrorizing the state.
Danladi described the move as a comprehensive security review involving security agencies and key community stakeholders.
The decision, according to the chairman, is a proactive response to emerging security challenges and credible threats that have unsettled residents in recent days.
While details of the threats were not disclosed, sources within the community say intelligence reports indicated possible incursions by armed groups operating in parts of the state.
Danladi stressed that the measure is temporary and aimed at creating an enabling environment for security operatives to effectively address the situation.
“The safety of our people is our utmost priority. This curfew is a difficult but necessary step to ensure that we can stabilize the security situation. I appeal to all citizens for their full cooperation and understanding during this period.”
He urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities within the permitted hours, assuring them that the local government is working closely with security agencies to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
Security personnel have been deployed across strategic locations to enforce compliance, with authorities warning that violators of the order will face strict consequences.
Community leaders have also thrown their support behind the decision, calling on youths and local vigilante groups to collaborate with law enforcement by providing timely information that could help avert potential attacks.
The curfew marks one of the most decisive security measures taken in recent months within the area, underscoring growing concerns about banditry and rural insecurity in parts of Kwara State. Residents are advised to plan their movements carefully and adhere strictly to the directive as efforts intensify to safeguard lives and property.
