Pandemonium has broken out at state congress of the Ogun chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) after gunmen stormed the premises and shot in the air, forcing dozens of members and security operatives to scamper for safety in the state.
The violence which broke out at the palace of Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, Alake of Egbaland, on Saturday, has crippled the event that started amid fun-fair with members of the party trooping to the venue of the congress designed to pick executive of the party.
Although the ruling party has been polarised with a faction of the state chapter of APC led by former governor, Ibikunle Amosun, a senator representing the state, and the other led by the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, following outcomes of the party’s primaries for the 2019 gubernatorial election.
Following the division within the state chapter of the party, the two factions had vowed to go ahead with their congresses since the party at the national level was yet to recognise any of the factional groups.
The Amosun faction had rented the event center inside the palace in Abeokuta, capital of the state, as the venue of its congress, while the Abiodun led-APC is holding its congress at the main bowl of the MKO Abiodun Stadium in Kuto, Abeokuta.
However, shortly before the exercise commenced, gunmen broke into the venue, which was being used by the faction loyal to Amosun, and disrupted the exercise, dispersing the members.
A few minutes after the gunmen had left, the apparently aggrieved members, who complained over the actions of the security operatives, charged towards the security men and chased them away.
It would be recalled that the warring factions held parallel ward and Local Government congresses last month and vowed not to back down on their decisions.
