Three police officers have been reported dead following an attack by gunmen on a security checkpoint in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.
As gathered, the officers were killed when gunmen stormed the area in multiple vehicles and opened fire on the operatives.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident, which occurred in the border town that shares a boundary with Kwara State, threw the once-busy route into chaos, as passersby scrambled for safety.
Egbe is considered a strategic crossing point for both travellers and criminal groups operating in the North-Central region.
Sources noted that, aside from killing the officers, the gunmen also made away with rifles belonging to the victims.
Videos shared online purportedly show the suspects’ getaway vehicles leaving the scene, although police authorities have yet to confirm the authenticity of the footage.
The Guild reports that this attack came just hours after a separate armed assault in Bokungi, a Tsaragi community in neighbouring Kwara State, where bandits killed one person and rustled several cows overnight, a development that has heightened concerns about rising cross-border criminal operations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kogi State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
