JUST IN: Gunmen kill Nasarawa monarch, abduct over 12 villagers

By Awoniyi Ademide

A monarch has yet again been killed and over 12 community members abducted following another horrific night for villagers battling the menace of gunmen.

Unknown gunmen numbering up to 20 invaded a peaceful village during late hours with gunshots and cries of innocent villagers clouding the air, an eyewitness told The Guild.

“They came in suddenly, shooting sporadically. Everyone started running for safety, “Our village head was gunned down. They also took several people with them.”

The invasion which occurred in Tse Yange, a Tiv settlement in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, reportedly continued into the early hours of Monday, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Many homes were deserted, and several villagers sustained injuries as they fled into nearby bushes trying to save their lives and that of their families.

Meanwhile, as of press time, official confirmation on the exact number of casualties and abductees was still pending from the authorities but an eyewitness has clearly stated that the village head was killed and over 12 people can be confirmed to have been kidnapped.

The eye witness who pleaded anonymity further described the incident as a “heartbreaking attack on a peaceful community,” calling on security agencies to act swiftly. “We can’t continue to live in fear while our people are being killed and kidnapped,” he said.

The Nasarawa State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, when contacted for confirmation, the police spokesperson did not pick calls or return calls.
