JUST IN: Gunmen kill mother, child, others during attack on Benue community

By Awoniyi Ademide

A mother, her child, and four villagers have been reported dead and scores of residents injured after gunmen attacked Uzer village in Tombo Local Government Area of Benue State,

It was learnt that the gunmen stormed the village along the Ayilamo-Tse Abi-Tse Ikyo-Tyulen expressway at night and killed the villagers, particularly the mother, and her child.

Aside from the mother and the child, the four other victims were identified as Matthew Tyôkighir, Myangega, Ortamem Zwa Injo, Emmanuel Sanka, and Justina Ashe.

It was learnt on Thursday that the attack that left six people dead occurred yesterday evening around 8 p.m. as residents were unwinding outside their homes.

The fresh attack on the community sited few meters away from Ayilamo town, another community that has endured over two decades of persistent violence.

An eyewitness, Terlumun Akombo, recounted that the attackers struck under the cover of darkness, opening fire as villagers sat outside their compounds.

In the chaos, six people were killed on the spot. A woman and her child, who sustained severe injuries, later died at the Primary Healthcare Center in Ayilamo.

Another resident, James Kumaga, revealed that security forces were notified but arrived after the assailants had fled.

Tombo Ward, a farming community, has been plagued by insecurity for over 20 years, primarily due to suspected herdsmen attacks that have forced many residents to abandon their homes.

Community leader, Tyodue Aboh, appealed for the federal and state governments’ intervention, urging them to provide adequate security so displaced farmers can return to their lands.
