JUST IN: Fubara negotiates for peace, bowing to Rivers’ lawmakers demand

By Monsurudeen Olowoopejo

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has indicated readiness to sign a peace deal with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the 27 house of assembly members, saying peace is important for the development of our state.

While describing the decision as his sacrifice for peace to return, he urged Wike and the lawmakers led by Martin Amaewhule to consider the interest of Rivers State and accept his peace deal.

Fubara stated this on Thursday amid agitation for his impeachment by some residents of the state over sundry issues alleged to have been violated by the administration.

The governor gave the signal at the commissioning of the remodeled Okrika Gramma School, a project he described as a legacy project which defines the administration’s efforts of providing the needed services and quality education for the citizens in the state.

Fubara stressed that the supreme court has ruled on the issues and settled the grievances that had lingered more than anyone could have expected in the state.

The governor noted that after the court judgement what is left for all parties is to embrace peace for the development of Rivers State.

He said: “It is important at this time that we all embrace peace. The supreme court has made its judgement, and we do not have any option but to abide by it. We have started the process. We are appealing to other parties to consider the interest of Rivers State.

“I believe that it is important because the only thing that we all owe this state is peace and development. I am open any day and time for total peace in our state. I have this understanding that if I have to govern well in Rivers, there is need for peace to reign in our dear state”.

Earlier, the governor urged former students of public schools to give back to the institutions that breed and aid them towards achieving their dream.

He noted that their achievements should be a motivating spirit to give back to the schools, in order to assist the next generations have good facilities to aid their learning.

According to him, Education is the bedrock of development and a key ingredient that, if managed well, helps to reduce crime in the state. I believe that if all the facilities put here are used, the level of crime and criminalities will reduce drastically.

“I want to assure you that we will continue to do our best for Rivers because the state’s interest is paramount to us. What is the job of the old boys of the school? because what many schools need is not beyond the reach of the former students of this great institution”.
