In a move to honour the birth of Prophet Muhammad, the Federal Government has announced a nationwide public holiday, offering citizens a moment to reflect on the Prophet’s life and values.
The declaration aims to create space for unity, prayer, and deeper appreciation of the virtues of peace, love, and compassion in the nation.
The Nigerian government disclosed that the special day is not just a pause from work but a call to action for Nigerians to embrace harmony, tolerance, and mutual respect, principles seen as vital for a stronger, more stable country.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that Friday, September 5, 2025, has been set aside as a public holiday for the Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration while issuing the announcement through a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo, while extending his greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and beyond, urged the faithful to reflect on the life of Prophet Muhammad and draw inspiration from his character.
“Our country needs the values the Prophet stood for, humility, compassion, and a genuine love for peace,” the minister said. “By practising these virtues, we can bridge divides and build a nation that works for everyone.”
He also appealed to Nigerians of all faiths to use the opportunity to pray for peace, security, and stability across the country, while pledging support for policies that drive national development and unity.
“The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen our bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and live out the Prophet’s teachings of respect and selfless service,” Tunji-Ojo added.
The minister concluded by encouraging citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperative with government efforts, wishing Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid ul-Mawlid.
