Less than 48 hours before Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, the Federal Government has cancelled this year’s parade ceremony, earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, to mark the anniversary.
The decision, which alters the usual October 1 celebrations, comes as the administration repositions its priorities around governance reforms and national projects.
Although the parade has been scrapped, officials stressed that the development does not lessen the symbolic weight of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
Other scheduled events, according to the government, will continue as planned to reflect the nation’s unity and resilience.
The announcement was made on Monday through a statement signed by Director of Information and Public Relations Segun Imohiosen, at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Furthermore, the statement clarified that the parade, initially scheduled for Wednesday, October 1, was dropped in line with the President’s itinerary in Lagos.
“The Federal Government wishes to reassure citizens that the cancellation is not a downgrading of our independence celebrations,” the statement read.
“On the contrary, it allows us to focus on ongoing reforms while preserving the dignity of this milestone.”
Government officials also expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by the adjustment and called on Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests to show understanding.
“What matters most is not the parade itself but the collective spirit of nationhood and the determination to build a stronger Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership,” Imohiosen added.
The Guild reports that with the parade set aside, stakeholders are expected to mark the 65th Independence Anniversary through other commemorative programmes, including official engagements, cultural showcases, and reflection on the country’s journey since 1960.
