JUST IN: Court turns down El-Rufai’s bail application

A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has denied the bail application filed by former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, ruling that the request could not be granted at this stage of the ongoing proceedings.

El-Rufai’s defence counsel, Ukpon Akpan, had urged the court to release the former governor on bail, arguing that he is entitled to enjoy his constitutional rights while preparing to defend himself against the charges.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Akpan emphasized that granting bail would allow El-Rufai to consult effectively with his legal team and organize his defence as the trial progresses.

“Our client deserves the opportunity to prepare adequately for his defence outside detention,” Akpan said, adding that the former governor would comply with any conditions the court might impose.

The prosecution opposed the application, insisting that the allegations against El-Rufai are serious and require careful handling. They argued that granting bail at this stage could interfere with ongoing investigative efforts.

“The charges before the court are weighty, and releasing the defendant now may undermine ongoing investigations,” the prosecution stated.

After hearing submissions from both sides, the court declined the bail request and directed that proceedings would continue at a later date. The next sitting was fixed for March 31, 2026.
