JUST IN: Court adjourns Bello’s N80bn fraud trial to 2025

The Federal High Court in Abuja has deferred the hearing of a suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to try a former governor in absentia for N80 billion money laundering charges until January 21, 2025.

This hearing date marks the latest in a series of adjournments including Sept 25 and Oct 30, 2024, due to the defendant’s absence.

The ruling judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, adjourned the proceedings to rule on Wednesday, following arguments in the EFCC application to proceed with Bello’s trial as he refused to appear before the court despite being summoned.

The council to EFCC, Kemi Pinheiro, who filled the application under section 275 of the administration of the Criminal Justice Act, requested the court to enter a not-guilty plea for Bello and proceed with the trial.

He argued that the court cannot appear helpless as this would encourage lawlessness and the defendant’s refusal to participate should not hinder the trial process.
