President Bola Tinubu has led thousands of eminent Nigerians and emissaries from African and European countries, as well as others, to lay the body of former President, Muhammadu Buhari, to rest in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
Others who joined the president to bury the country’s former leader inside his home in Daura were the Prime Minister of Niger, Ali Lamine Zeine, the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and his predecessor, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his colleagues from other states.
Buhari, who passed on at the age of 82 after a brief illness in London, United Kingdom (UK). was laid to rest on Tuesday under strict adherence to Islamic rites and military parades with gun salutes in the state.
The president and other dignitaries accompanied the body of the former leader after it arrived at the Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina to Daura, traveling over 50 kilometers to the ancient town where the burial rites were held.
After their arrival, the body of the late president was interred after funeral prayers were held at a helipad near his country home, with thousands of sympathisers thronging the town to pay their last respect to him.
As gathered, Buhari was buried in a spot where he usually sat in his compound’s garden when he was alive.
The body of the ex-leader, who left the Nigerian Army as a Brigadier-General, was draped in the colours of the Nigerian flag and wheeled into his compound slowly with gunshots as a mark of respect for the former president and commander-in-chief.
Before Buhari’s body was interred, the Chief of Defence Staff, Chris Musa, read the citation of the former president by the graveside before the interment by the Muslim clerics who were joined by the Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, and the son of the deceased, Yusuf Buhari.
Earlier, Tinubu had received Buhari’s remains at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina at about 1:51 p.m after arriving on the premises from Abuja at 1:42 p.m. and inspected a guard of honour.
The late president passed away on Sunday, July 13, in a hospital in London, United Kingdom (UK), following a prolonged illness.
