JUST IN: Adamawa Gov. joins APC after 15 PDP lawmakers left

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, days after 15 members of the state assembly resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amid mounting internal tensions.

Fintiri announced his decision during a statewide broadcast on Friday morning, confirming that he has formally aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to him, the move was taken after broad consultations with political stakeholders and members of his administration.

The governor stated that the decision was guided by what he described as the “overall development interest” of Adamawa State.

He added that remaining in the PDP would no longer serve the long-term political and economic priorities of the state.

His defection follows the earlier resignation of 15 lawmakers from the Adamawa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker and other principal officers, who cited unresolved internal crises within the PDP at the national level.

Their departure had significantly weakened the party’s legislative dominance in the state and fueled speculation that the governor’s exit was imminent.

However, Friday’s broadcast has now put an end to weeks of uncertainty, formally reshaping Adamawa’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources within the state government confirmed that several commissioners and senior political appointees have also declared loyalty to the APC, suggesting a coordinated transition rather than an isolated defection.

The Guild reports that with this move, Adamawa joins a growing list of states witnessing high-level party switches as political actors reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
