Jihadists kill 14 soldiers in Burkina Faso

By Helen Okoli.

A deadly assault on a military outpost in northern Burkina Faso has claimed the lives of at least 14 soldiers, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by jihadist groups across the Sahel region.

Security sources reported that the attack targeted troops stationed near the town of Bagade, an area that has experienced repeated incursions by armed groups in recent months.

The Sahel branch of Al-Qaeda, known as the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), claimed responsibility for the raid.

While details remain limited, initial reports suggest the attackers carried out a coordinated strike that overwhelmed the soldiers. Officials noted that the death toll is provisional and may rise as search operations continue for missing personnel.

Burkina Faso, governed by a military junta since a 2022 coup d’état, has endured deadly attacks from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State for over a decade, particularly in the northern regions.
