ISWAP kills eight soldiers in Borno

The Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, has killed eight soldiers during a face-off in Borno State.

The two groups engaged in a gun duel resulted in the dead casualties and leaving several 23 other soldiers wounded.

A security source disclosed that approximately 70 fighters affiliated with the Islamic State West Africa Province mobilised for the operation which occurred on Monday evening.

He said they advanced on motorcycles in what appeared to be a premeditated raid with the insurgents reportedly destroying critical military assets during the incursion.

One member of a civilian joint task force supporting the military said the attackers set ablaze the facility and destroyed no fewer than 11 gun trucks.

“They also carted away anti-aircraft weapons mounted on the vehicles before retreating,” the source said.

Further details from the security sources indicated that the terrorists had departed from a stronghold on Dabar Masara Island in Lake Chad, navigating a lengthy route to avoid detection before launching the assault.

The targeted base had functioned as a strategic defensive position, shielding nearby communities from repeated insurgent advances.

Meanwhile, The Guild reports that this latest attack underscores a renewed wave of coordinated strikes by ISWAP and its rival faction, Boko Haram, against military installations in the North-East especially in Borno.
