The Iranian prosecutor general’s office has warned that Iranians living abroad could face property confiscation and other legal penalties if they express support for the United States or Israel.
The announcement follows reports that some members of the Iranian diaspora, advocating for political change in Tehran, took to the streets in European and American cities to celebrate the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei amid the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
“A warning has been issued to those Iranians living abroad who, in different ways, sympathize with, support, or cooperate with the American-Zionist (Israeli) enemy,” the prosecutor general’s office said, according to state media on Monday.
“They will be met with the confiscation of all their properties and other legal penalties in accordance with the law.”
Newly established Telegram channels have shared information on prominent Iranians abroad who have posted comments critical of Iran’s clerical authorities and supportive of the U.S.-Israeli military operations that began on February 28.
According to Iranian government data, up to 5 million Iranians live abroad, mostly in the United States and Western Europe, while Iranian media estimates suggest the number could be closer to 10 million.
