Indian police nabs two Nigerians over colleague’s death

By Marycelia Agim

Two Nigerian nationals living in India have been taken into custody by local authorities over the alleged killing of their compatriot following a dispute over a woman in the Pisoli-Phursungi area of Pune, India.

The suspects, identified as Chukwudi Okafor, 31, and Samuel Eze, 34, are accused of attacking their friend, Emeka Christian, during an argument that reportedly stemmed from a personal disagreement involving a woman known to all parties.

Police sources indicated that the victim, a 40-year-old garment trader legally resident in India with a valid visa running until 2027, had gone to the apartment of a Nigerian woman along with friends for a small party.

“One of the accused was in a relationship with the woman and used to visit her frequently. The victim objected to this, which led to a quarrel,” a police source told India Today, explaining the origin of the dispute.

Investigators said the situation worsened as the victim attempted to leave the apartment around 3 a.m., with police noting that “the argument turned violent when the victim tried to leave.”

“As he was leaving the flat, the accused followed him to the parking area and attacked him with a hard object,” a senior police officer told India Today, adding that the victim collapsed shortly after the assault.

The injured man was rushed to a hospital by Gift Utah, vice president of the Nigerian Students’ Union in Pune, but later died while receiving treatment.

Police confirmed the arrest of the two suspects and disclosed that investigations are continuing, as authorities believe up to four individuals may have been involved, noting that “the investigation is ongoing, and a manhunt has been launched for other suspects.”
